The machines keep getting smarter. More "autonomous," they say. Now the Pentagon is diving even deeper into the area of autonomy. The next generation of drones is going to be even smarter than the last. Probably smart enough to know, on its own, when to release its payload. A cause for concern? No, don't worry about it. The Pentagon wants to reassure us all--"You won't be killed by a robot unless a human instructs the robot to kill you."

Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter signed, on November 21, a series of instructions to “minimize the probability and consequences of failures” in autonomous or semi-autonomous armed robots “that could lead to unintended engagements,” starting at the design stage (.pdf, thanks to Cryptome.org).
So, you can rest assured that the folks at the Pentagon are looking out for you. The last thing they want is to start inadvertently killing people right? I mean, these folks want to make love no war right?!
