Shakespeare used the following words to describe jealousy:
O, beware, my lord, of jealousy;
It is the green-ey'd monster, which doth mock
The meat it feeds on. That cuckold lives in bliss,
Who, certain of his fate, loves not his wronger:
But O, what damnèd minutes tells he o'er
Who dotes, yet doubts, suspects, yet strongly loves!
This seems to explain all of our politics. What do you do to win? You point to the guy who is better off, and you say--"That guy, he is a bad guy! He has taken advantage of the system to make more money than you! Vote for me and I will punish that guy!"
In other words, our politics is all about punishment and retribution. It is all about getting even. Evening the score. This is obviously bad, because it means we are going tribal. We are going backwards. Becoming more like beasts than what men ought to be.
What say you Newsvine? Are you concerned about the future of America when it is all about getting even, about punishing people because they have been successful?
